This is such a positive experience, I feel good helping a needy pet and she is so happy to have a home. So many need homes, so adopt don’t shop and always spay and neuter and go to HSBH and help a pet find a good home. If you can’t take one home then give a cash donation and or supplies to help with their care.
I had a very upsetting experience there today. My family fell in love with a sweet beagle named Rowdy and we were planning on adopting him. We brought our two dogs in to meet Rowdy (both were adopted from HSBH in 2012 and 2015.) Our dogs were nervous and anxious with the overall setting so when we were finally brought into the room for them to meet Rowdy (which had several people in there making them more nervous,) the meeting didn't go as well as it could of. The adoption counselor (who was extremely rude from the moment we met her) just simply said it wasn't going to work out & that was it. She only gave us at the most five minutes and didn't even begin to understand that our dogs were having a difficult time with the overall surroundings. Rowdy would of had a wonderful home with us full of love & I know for a fact that he would of gotten along fine with our other two dogs in our home setting. My family has adopted one cat and three dogs from HSBH throughout the years, but we will never adopt from there again.
Unfortunately they make it difficult to adopt. I highly recommended going thru Pet Smart. Not nearly the hassle and you are still adopting!
I went to the human society to find a kitty. I hadn’t been there before and was pleased to see how open and friendly it is. The cats were in a large cat friendly room with windows for viewing and once an adoption counselor was given my case I was allowed to go in the cat room to visit with all of them. I already had been to the website so came with a kitty picked out. I named her Mia, I was told she was a stray who wasn’t good with other cats and had strange ways. So when I saw her in the cat room getting along fine I had no worries that she would fit in at home. She doesn’t like to be held but that’s probably to be expected for a cat that was homeless. She is very calm and friendly comes right to me to be petted just doesn’t want to set on my lap which is fine. She moved right in and found her place, likes being a house cat. She’s not afraid of the dogs or the other cat.
I have been incredibly impressed with this organization and its staff. They have the goal of finding a forever home for every animal. I have adopted an assortment of animals from there and I cannot say enough great things about the organization. They recently installed an HVAC system that was very needed (but it took a while for them to get the money to complete the project (over a quarter million dollars). Improved air circulation has made a huge difference.
Unfortunately I have had no experiences with the Humane Society itself, other than an experience with one employee today which I am basing this review - an organization is only as good as it's poorest member. Earlier today I and my dog were attacked by a vicious dog while walking on the sidewalk in our neighborhood, I was scared for not only my dog's life, but my own. After we escaped into a neighbors house, I called the animal control (which is ran through the Humane Society and contracted by Pennington County) to report the incident. The man I spoke with, who told me his name was Dustin, was extremely rude and inconsiderate. When I told him that he was being quite rude, he replied with, "I get a million of these calls a day." I then replied with, "Then maybe you should gain a little empathy" and calmly finished my report. Dustin's demeanor would better be suited in a position that does not deal with public. I am extremely dissatisfied with my experience with the Humane Society and Animal Control in reporting this attack. While I didn't expect this stranger to hold my hand and listen to me weep, I did expect human decency and professionalism in the matter.
